Ron Jellse Skating Tips--     Let me talk about Compulsory Figure Skating first.  Notice, the first word is compulsory.  This type of figure skating is the fundamental for all the rest of your skating.  Therefore, it is compulsory that you...

1.        Must lean to the center of the circle constantly with a posture baseline.

2.        Maintain a pure, constant edge with a pure, constant lean without sub curve or any kind of wobble or hitching motion.

3.        Be able to change feet at the intersection of the long and short axis from one clean edge to another clean edge.  (Don’t leave two feet on the floor past the long axis.)

4.        Do all one foot turns from one solid edge with no wobbles or change of edges before or after the turns.

5.        Do all turns and take-offs so they are placed directly on the long axis and not be early or late.

6.        Keep the pace of the figure consistent and not vary. (Pace, once chosen on the initial take-off should be maintained.)

7.        No tenseness or poor positions of the head, arms, hands or shoulders should ever be observed.  (The figure should seemingly be skated with ease.)

8.        Your free foot should be held the same distance from the floor in front and back.

9.        Your arms should be held the same distance from your body at all times.

10.     Your toe should be pointed except when passing it through, where it will level off so it will not affect the edge you are standing on.  (Example:  point flat point on passing on inside edges, so inside hip can stay down.)

11.     You must pass your foot close and in a straight line so as not to affect the edge you are standing on.

12.     Your hands should be held flat to the floor with the fingers neither spread nor clenched.

You should never see extremes of the free leg either too open or pigeon toed.
